Healthy Homemade Dog Food – Little Chefs Favourite

If someone had of told me I’d be a proud (if not completely dotty) Fur Baby Momma a couple of years ago, I’m pretty sure I would not have believed it. I know I used to secretly believe dotty dog owners who spent fortunes on their pups were a little odd. But, that was before I saw this face!

The ‘Im Totally Introspective’ selfie, right Little Chef?!

Before long we found ourselves stalking the dog breeders website daily and worrying if anyone had adopted him while we made plans to trek interstate to pick him up and bring him home, complete with all the must have pooch food and paraphernalia required. Within weeks we’d bought his special little car seat and toys and bed and enrolled him into Puppy Pre School.

When the puppy alarm sounds!!!

True to his name Little Chef, we found he had a leaning towards a constantly varied diet, our boy was quite particular with what he was prepared to dine on, that was obvious.

How’s the serenity? So much serenity!

He’d even go hungry for days rather than stick to the boring recommended vets suggestions. Something had to be done, so began the task of trawling the google and reading all the labels at the supermarket which confirmed ‘allowed’ ingredients, we knew we wanted to make him healthy homemade dog food, the challenge was now on to find Little Chef’s favourites.

Live as puppies do, like EVERYTHING is an adventure!

Life has not been the same since, and these days it’s completely normal to buy fresh ingredients with the weekly shop to make Little Chef’s fave dishes, and despite all the hoo-hah of being particular, we’ve figured out variations of Doggy Risotto that is a winner every time.

Visiting the local coffee shop isn’t just about human food, our V.I.D = Very Important Dog gets special treats too.

Turkey and Vegetable Risotto

  • 500 grams turkey meat, minced
  • 2 cups (400g) brown rice
  • 6-8 cups water (Little Chef likes a soupy risotto, so we often add more water)
  • 1 medium zucchini, grated
  • 2 large carrots, grated
  • 2 large sticks celery, grated
  • ½ sweet potato, grated
  • Handful of parsley and or basil, finely chopped
  1. In a heavy-based pan over medium heat, add turkey mince until lightly browned.
  2. Stir through carrot, celery, zucchini and sweet potato until vegetables are softened.
  3. Add rice and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.
  4. Add 2 cups of the water and bring to boil.
  5. Cover and simmer for 6-8 minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Continue to add remaining water (about 1/2 cup at a time). Cook, stirring constantly, for 8-10 minutes or until liquid is absorbed and rice is tender yet firm to the bite and the risotto is creamy. Add herbs and stir to combine.

I’d love to know, do you have a pooch pal that is particular about what he eats? If yes, please share your healthy homemade dog food recipes in the comments below.

Adorable Little Chef found the right home. I am sure you will be creating many more recipes for him. You should write a doggy cookbook.

What a doll face.

AWwwww, Little Chef is adorable!!! Dizzy Miss Izzy would eat anything and everything if we’d let her. She hears the produce drawer open in the fridge and she perks up. At meal time, she starts drooling and her teeth start chattering…she is SO excited for her stinky dry dog food! Picky, she is not. But I know she’d love some doggy risotto!!

He is absolutely adorable! And lucky too to have a owner that cares so much for him, to the point to make homemade meals. My little one loves animals and hope I can give her one in the future.

I don’t cook for my dogs, but if I did this would be perfect. Maybe for humans as well!

Ooh my little Mochi would love these! She basically loves human food and this looks awesome. We have got her onto a dog food just to make sure she gets the nutrients but she still loves human food the best (and unlike Little Chef she wouldn’t skip food for days).

It is SO cute that you’d go out of your way to cook for Little Chef! He looks so loved and you are giving him a wonderful home 🙂 Risotto for him sounds amazing…perhaps all his other doggy friends are jealous.

He does sound like the kind of dog that’s very adventurous, and always so nice to see him out and about walking with you…or maybe he is the one taking you out for a walk 😀 I’m guessing he can run much faster than you, lol.

Big hugs to Little Chef and you <3 <3 <3

Absolutely adore your pup Anna, he is just too adorable. <3 How wonderful to have a mama like you to feed him such glorious and healthy food. We only have cats and let me tell you, they are as fussy as can be but will only eat a certain sachet of soft food in gravy which thankfully is readily available and obviously their daily dose of cream.
Have a beautiful and happy weekend sweet Anna. Winter is prepping us at the moment even though I am fighting her every step of the way!
🙂 Mandy xoxoxo
