How to make an Espresso Martini

Hard Bean: How to make an Espresso Martini. Anna Johnston - www.shenannagans.com

Have you ever had professional glamour photos taken of yourself? You know the ones…. you channel Sandy from Grease or maybe Rose from Titanic, you picture yourself sipping a cocktail as you recline by the fire on a chaise lounge, dressed in clothing you wouldn’t normally wear. Your face painted so heavily with makeup, you’re pretty sure it won’t at all resemble your own, the photographer stands a metre from your person very intimidatingly pointing the world’s largest lens in your face, asking or maybe expecting that you easily contort yourself. Your brain a flurry of confusion as you are instructed to ‘lower your chin, but look up, a little more to the right, too far right, give sexy eyes, NO… not drunk eyes, show less teeth, more lips, pout, not duck face, shoulder down, chest out, chin slightly up, look at me….. Hold it, hold it…….. HOLD IT!’

Hard Bean: How to make an Espresso Martini. Anna Johnston - www.shenannagans.com

Unlike my glamour photo shoot, the Espresso Martini was born ready. Garnished with a few coffee beans, and loaded with caffeine, this little number is the perfect fusion of sophistication and simplicity. It can be consumed on its own, during dinner or as a fancy digestif post meal, the coffee and coffee liquor aid digestion – don’t chya know!

Hard Bean: How to make an Espresso Martini. Anna Johnston - www.shenannagans.com

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time:  0 minutes

  • 50ml Espresso
  • 30ml Absolut Vodka
  • 15ml Tia Maria
  • 15ml Frangelico

Step 1: So, to begin… knock up your espresso. Let it go cold, as this will reduce dilution.

Step 2: Measure out 50ml of espresso (excluding crema) and add it to the cocktail shaker packed with ice.

Step 3: Add the 30ml of vodka, 15ml Tia and 15ml Frangelico and shaky shaky shaky.

Step 4: Then strain into a tumbler or Martini Glass.

I’d love to know, have you ever had professional glamour photos taken of yourself? If yes, did you look like you and do you hang the photo for all to see?

So when are you inviting me over for cocktails? 😀

Elizabeth @ Compass & Fork - April 10, 2016 Reply

No glamour shots- but I could do that drink after dinner! am sure it helps with digestion too!

Elissa - April 10, 2016 Reply

So glamorous. And you look quite glamorous too, almost as glam as the martini next to the firelight! What a winning combo, love coffee however it comes so that would be a special drink.

    Anna - April 11, 2016 Reply

Thanks Elissa! 🙂 And the fireside cocktails were so delicious. Im with you, coffee in any form is ACE. 🙂

Wow! I love learning how to make homemade cocktails. This espresso martini looks great!

Laura Lynch - April 10, 2016 Reply

I can see that being my go-to after dinner drink. I like to drink my dessert and that martini sounds perfect!

Serina aka Ms Frugal Ears - April 9, 2016 Reply

I must confess that my sister and I had some fairly retro and ordinary glamour shots taken about 15 years ago. It was kind of fun in a corny sort of a way. We didn’t look nearly as hot as you do in yours, though!

    Anna - April 10, 2016 Reply

I want proof Serina. Teehee! They really are rather silly huh? I look at those pictures and shudder. Lol!

Kryste (@themomnoms) - April 9, 2016 Reply

Oh my gawd, I want this in my mouth right now!

Kathy @ Olives & Garlic - May 27, 2015 Reply

I love that photo of you. 🙂 So awesome. And this espresso martini is sooooooo awesome too. Yumm

    Anna - May 27, 2015 Reply

Thanks Kathy! It makes me laugh, so awkward it is. But I appreciate the kind words. 🙂
And yes, the martini is a delight, hope you enjoy.

Tina @ Tina's Chic Corner - May 26, 2015 Reply

I’ve never had a glamour shot done… nor have I had an espresso martini. I’m thinking I’d go for that martini in a heartbeat over a photo shoot of little o’ me. 😉

    Anna - May 27, 2015 Reply

I get the not having had glam photos taken before, but never having an espresso martini…. #mindblown
Get on changing that stat my lady. 🙂

Agness - May 24, 2015 Reply

Mmmmmm that’s a perfect drink for a Saturday night, heh? 🙂 Easy peasy!

    Anna - May 24, 2015 Reply

Totally perfect for a Saturday evening. Often the drink of choice for such occasions. 🙂 Hope you enjoy, know you love coffee.

Maureen | Orgasmic Chef - May 23, 2015 Reply

I have never had a portrait like that but if that were mine, I’d hang it. Everywhere. 🙂

Then I’d sit down with a feather boa around my neck and have one of these martinis. As one should.

    Anna - May 23, 2015 Reply

Hahaha…. You crack me up Maureen, totes making a copy of the glam photo and hanging behind the toilet door, wouldn’t that be a laugh. LOL! 🙂
One should have a feather boa for drinking cocktails in general. 🙂

Cecilia - May 19, 2015 Reply

I’m always reluctant in making drinks. But with your recipe and explanation I feel I can do it. Thanks for sharing and inspiring.

    Anna - May 19, 2015 Reply

I am a bit the same, but this bad boy is simple enough to prepare and always looks amazing too. Let me know how you go. 🙂

THE HUNGRY MUM - May 18, 2015 Reply

ooooh, has been forever since I have a cocktail of an description so I’ll def take one of these, thanks! Never had a glamor photo done, though 😉

    Anna - May 19, 2015 Reply

Come on over lovely lady, I shall have the boys whip up a cheeky espresso martini for you. 🙂
And if you ever get a chance to have glam photos taken, do, its a lot of fun. 🙂

Sneha - May 17, 2015 Reply

Hey..I would definitely drink this cocktail, as I not a fan of creamy ones… The only problem would be that if you could probably drink them all night and literally all night because you could never go to sleep.. It totally cracks me because, as you said, it’s so cheesy, yet somehow you managed to look gorgeous. 🙂

    Anna - May 19, 2015 Reply

Thanks heaps for stopping by, Sneha. 🙂
This cocktail is a beauty, and isn’t actually creamy, that is a frothy type bubble from the ingredients being shaken together. Similar to Guinness beer when you pour it. You’ll have to give it a go. 🙂
As for the glam photo shoot, you are seriously too kind. Every time I look at the picture, I find myself giggling at the silliness of it.
    Have a great week.

Amanda (@lambsearshoney) - May 16, 2015 Reply

I’m pretty sure my glamour photo days are well behind me. My cocktail days, however, are most certainly not!

Dedy@Dentist Chef - May 15, 2015 Reply

Raymund - May 14, 2015 Reply

I never had a glamour photo I was always the photographer, so I am on the other side of the lens 🙂

Not even close to model status, Kim. But…. I love that you manage to make me LOL every week with your thoughtful comments.
Loves back at chya from the Berra. xo

Mabel Kwong - May 10, 2015 Reply

“shaky shaky shaky” I love how you say it and describe the mixing of espresso and everything else together. You sure know what you are doing 😀

I looove that glamour shot of you. You could really be a spokesperson for Nescafe, or star in the coffee ads alongsided George Clooney – you look very classy and sophisticated. Go on, send this shot to Mr Clooney and I’m sure you’ll be famous in no time 😉

As for your little Miss Mabel, no, she hasn’t done any glamour shots. Yet. I don’t know what I’ll want to wear and what I want to look like 😀

    Anna - May 11, 2015 Reply

    Ha! That’s technical speak. 🙂

Bahaha…. you are the best, always so thoughtful with your comments. I think I look silly, dazed, maybe even a little drunk. G. Clooney would laugh and laugh and laugh! Lol.

Miss Mabel, you should dress in something totally outside your norm, like a cowgirl, or a biker chick. It’s fun and if you are anything like me, you wont be able to stop laughing.

Hope you are having an amazing week. All the loves. xo

Liz - May 10, 2015 Reply

Lovely photo of you! And your martini looks wonderful, too! Love the flavors, though I have a feeling I’d be a wobbling mess after just one 🙂

    Anna - May 11, 2015 Reply

    Thanks Liz! 🙂
Yes, the espresso martini does have a fair bit of bang for your buck, they are very easy to drink, the wobbles are almost guaranteed. LOL!

Tandy | Lavender and Lime - May 9, 2015 Reply

Next time I’m in the mood for cocktails I will try this. My professional photo is terrible and thankfully only used once by the publisher 🙂

    Anna - May 11, 2015 Reply

Oh goodie, Tandy. Let me know what you think of it?
Ha…. I should have created a # and got peeps to share their glam shots for a giggle. I think mine is rather ridiculous too. 🙂

Denise Browning@From Brazil To You - May 8, 2015 Reply

I am in love with the last photo of espresso martini… That’s a wow pic, Anna! And the drink sounds quite delish too.
On this Mother’s Day, I wish you spend time with your Mom and family, having fun and enjoying each other’s company.
Your gorgeous martini image will be on one of my Pinterest boards. xx

    Anna - May 11, 2015 Reply

You lovely Denise, are so sweet. Thank you for your kind comment. I was walking around the bar at my workplace trying to find a good backdrop for the photo, when I decided to sit down and actually enjoy the cocktail in front of the fire, I knew that was the winning combo.

I had a lovely day with my Momma, she adopted a puppy, so we went on a road trip to get him, stopped in quaint little towns for scones and jam, and an outback pub for a pie. Was fun! 🙂

I hope you had a magical day with your kiddies too.

Krista - May 8, 2015 Reply

I’ve never had a glamour shot, Anna, but I’m LOVING yours. 🙂 It totally cracks me because, as you said, it’s so cheesy, yet somehow you managed to look gorgeous. 🙂

WOW, really? I totes would have thought you’d had a glam shot or two. Especially with your modelling history.

I wanna see pictures of you that you dont recognise. Pretty please!

Lovely photo of you all glamourised, Miss Anna. And I do like the sound of this martini… although it may not like me so much! Have a happy day, cin cin.

Good golly gosh, no booze either? Sigh! This one actually has health benefits. LOL!
Happy days being had this end, right back at chya lovely Lizzy. xo

Elizabeth - May 7, 2015 Reply

I just laughed and laughed 🙂 All my friends had glamour shots in the 90’s I think it was the thing to do, but it was just one of those things that I never did 🙂 I really should go and have it done for a but of fun, as I am very photogenic 🙂
I must say that I would definitely drink this cocktail, as I not a fan of creamy ones… The only problem would be that if you could probably drink them all night and literally all night because you could never go to sleep! LOL! Liz xx

    Anna - May 7, 2015 Reply

I was saying to Mom last night that we should totes go back and have another round of glamour shots done, and this time go really outrageous.

Haha! You are too funny Liz. You absolutely must get to a glam studio stat, share the love my friend.

Yep, these bad boys have landed me in a whole heap of trouble in the past, you just keep drinking cause you never get tired.

    Happy week ahead. xox

Sue - May 7, 2015 Reply

Gorgeous photo! I’ve never had such photos taken. I have had a martini or two in my day if that counts. 🙂

Hotly Spiced - May 7, 2015 Reply

That’s a gorgeous photo of you, Anna. My husband and I used to run a photographic studio where we did a lot of family portraits. Drew would also crank up the music to get people to relax and he had a zoom lens so he didn’t need to get too close to the subject’s face xx

    Anna - May 7, 2015 Reply

Hahaha…. Thanks Charlie, although I don’t think I look anything much like myself. When I look at that pic, I cringe at the awkwardness of the whole experience. 🙂
Oh that’s cool, and what a good idea cranking the tunes to relax people. I bet you guys would have seen some rather crazy stuff, huh?!
