Now picture table cloth and picnic lunch set down for you while you chill out and listen to bird songs and the wind as it whistles through the vines. You are far from the crowds and among friendly faces, this image is what you’ll enjoy on the Wily Trout family winery’s gumboot tour and alfresco dining experience located at Poachers Pantry just outside of Canberra.

The spot where we ate, nestled between the Shiraz vines and a grassy paddock, set by a giant tall gum tree was a timber table with white linen tablecloth, cutlery, sparkling water and fresh flowers; a big umbrella and picnic basket complete with insect repellent and sunscreen.

Our “waiters” Will Bruce, a second generation wine grower and his partner Lauren pour our wine and talk us through the history of the vineyard, the grapes, the vines and his family story too.

The Wily Trout Vineyard was planted in the late 90s, Will explained that the cooler climate produces white grape viarities that make delicate yet complex Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and soft spicy Shiraz and elegant Pinot Noir.

We sipped the vino while we munched from the platters of cured hot and cold smoked meats, dips, lavosh, bread, pickled vegetables, Persian feta, dolmades and local Manzanillo olives and fruit chutney.

All the deliciousness – Wily Trout Vineyards, Canberra

The weather unfortunately wasn’t on our side, a gusty storm blew through which had us all running to our cars for cover. Without missing a beat, we were invited back to the family house to kick on.

The family intends to keep the vineyard and property feeling like a private home. It was obvious they enjoy hosting visitors, I felt so welcome and part of the family.
