Canberra Beer Day Out

Jesus Juice: Canberra Beer Day Out - Recipes, reminiscences and reviews compiled by Australian award-winning writer, chef and globetrotter, Anna Johnston.

Beer is a gorgeous thing. I’ve said it before, but I think beer has been the booze of choice for gods, royals, slaves, peasants, workers, low class, middle class, upper class, and a bunch of other groups I can’t think of at the moment. It helps end disputes (as well as cause some), has been a peace offering, and a way to break the ice to start lifelong friendships and it even makes ugly people look better. To me beer is a common denominator for us all, a drink that the peeps can sit down together and have a laugh over. But more impressively, we’re still finding ways to make it differently.

Now naturally, Canberra Beer Day Out was one heck of way to devote a hot and thirsty afternoon last Saturday, at the Former Transport Depot, the location of Canberra’s beloved Old Bus Depot Markets. Dozens of beers on offer and a bunch of tasty eats too. What better way to spend with good friends than a festival dedicated to the golden fluid of happiness, with 28 different Craft Beer Breweries and a handful of local food merchants too. We arrived shortly after the noon opening and the depot was already pretty packed with beer fans, some of them involved in a competitive & cutthroat game of Jenga.

The gang got the early bird tickets (of course…) each beer stall chose their own prices with 100ml tasters from 2-3 tokens and 285ml middy/pot serves from 5-7 tokens. Some cheeky stalls jacked their prices right up to around 10 tokens/dollars each, so it was a bit of an expensive day.

Breweries from all over Australia, Africa, America, Scotland, England, Holland, Belgium and Germany showcasing and selling their beer, so there were plenty of interesting beers on offer to keep the gang happy.

Beer ice cream… Yep, it’s a thing. Artisanal Canberra ice-cream maestros Frugii were serving a range of beery ice creamy goodness. Porter gelato and the Waldo and the chestnut pilsner and the blonde. #yarm I chose the Porter, rich and chocolaty. There was a hit of hoppy tang that peeked through too. I was truly thrilled and surprised, it won me over from the first taste, marveling at the genius who thought to pair 2 of my favourite things.

Yep, pretty sure it was definitely the best run beer tasting event I’ve been to, they got the food right as well. Beer….. one of the many testaments to the human race’s cleverness.

Great day out – Cheers to you I say!

A-MAZING Arpita, like one of the best things I have eaten in forever. So good! And yep, beer heaven it was. 🙂

Raymund - November 18, 2014 Reply

Philippines have a lot of weirdly flavoured ice cream like cheese, corn and purple yam to name some. They might sound odd but they taste awesome.

    Anna - November 19, 2014 Reply

Cheese ice-cream…. Heck yes, sounds amazing Raymund. 🙂

Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella - November 15, 2014 Reply

The Guy - November 14, 2014 Reply

Nice reflections in your opening of the powers and historical impact of beer. A true uniting and dividing force among so many.

This sounds like a fun festival although the variation in the token prices sounds pretty drastic.

I’ve never really spent a long time at beer festivals, I guess they are full on, long day events and I’d need to pace myself very carefully.

Cheers Anna.

    Anna - November 17, 2014 Reply

    Why thank ya! 🙂
It was a rather expensive day, but the laughs, good times with friends and amazing brews we got to try totally made it worth it.
Yes, you are right, any alco festival requires a steady approach, but it is an awesome way to see products you wouldn’t normally have access too unless you visited the brewery.

I LOVE food and wine everything! Still not very keen on the beer…
NO strange ice-cream/sorbet flavours come to mind… However… Lemon sorbet with nerds and wizz-fizz is excellent!

    Anna - November 14, 2014 Reply

Ohhh yeah, love the food & wine (& beer) everything myself. You take my oyster, Ill take your beer. 🙂
I have flash backs to last summer sipping slushies loaded with pop rocks when you said sorbet with nerds. #goodtimes

Sriprae - November 14, 2014 Reply

Lol! You are hilarious!

Beery ice cream sounds marvelous. Sounds like you had a terrific day of sipping and tasting. 🙂

Let’s see weird flavors…I still have 3/4 of a pint of “Fire & Ice” sorbet in my freezer (it’s been there for quite a while). It’s a combo of roasted hatch chiles, thyme, tequila and lime. There’s a slight nip and burn on the tongue when you taste it.

Much love to you! xo

    Anna - November 14, 2014 Reply

Teehee. Why thank ya my love. 🙂
A wonderful day was had by the gang indeed.
Holy yarm the Fire & Ice sounds amazing. I wonder if it is a thing I can find here in Aus?
Lotsa love to you too Miss Sriprae. Have a brilliant weekend. xox

Now you know I’m not a fan of Beer Anna (except Black), but I do like a good tasting event what ever they are offering… I would have loved to try as many malt beers as I could. So even though I would say I’m not a beer drinker at least we could still be friends, because I could choose a black beer to make everyone feel comfortable 🙂 LOL! Liz x

    Anna - November 13, 2014 Reply

Sold Liz…. We totes need you in Team Awesome. You would have fit right in on the weekend, as we all tended towards the darker beers. PS: I would say you are a REAL beer drinker if you only drink the dark stuff.

Alice - November 13, 2014 Reply

I have some serious love for a cold brew right now! Shame I don’t get to indulge in one for awhile yet. Thank goodness I can live vicariously via your food feed though. Beer made for Taco’s!?! That’s worth moving to Canberra for alone and cut throat Jenga too!

    Anna - November 13, 2014 Reply

Haha….. Oh I cant wait until we can hang out and share stories over a cold brew and game of Jenga. LOL! Hurry up and come to the Berra already. xox

Hotly Spiced - November 13, 2014 Reply

I love these sorts of events; they’re a great day out and a good way to try things you haven’t experienced before. How shocking though that some stall holders were taking advantage of the crowds and inflating their prices – I would have given them a swerve xx

    Anna - November 13, 2014 Reply

They really are a lot of fun huh Charlie. 🙂
Yep, the prices of some of the brews were rather excessive, but in most cases very much worth it, so I didn’t mind as much.
I know one of the fellas who organised the event, so going to let him know that that might be something they look at next year, maybe capping it.
Hope you are well lovely lady. xox

Krista - November 13, 2014 Reply

Haha… Thanks lovely Krista. We sure did have a hoot of a time, the TShirts made us stand out too. LOL!

Kris J - November 13, 2014 Reply

Bloody awesome. Perfect location for an event like this as well. Thanks for sharing your beer adventures with us. It sounded like a sucessful event as well. So, beer ice cream hey! I think i’d like to try this.

    Anna - November 13, 2014 Reply

Sup schnitzel! Yep… Was one heck of a way to spend a day. 🙂
I tried the 4 Pines you spoke of a few months back, pretty alright drop.
Beer ice-cream is a thing, we should whip up a batch over the Chrissy hols at your place. YEASSS… good idea right?!

lizzygoodthings - November 13, 2014 Reply

Cheers too…. wish I liked beer, but I don’t very much unless it’s teamed with lemonade in a Shandy. Love the T-shirts… and this does look like a fun day out.

    Anna - November 13, 2014 Reply

You might enjoy a cheeky Cider lovely Liz, especially if you enjoy a Shandy.
Haha, team Awesome had a ball. 🙂

Rachel (Rachel's Kitchen NZ) - November 13, 2014 Reply

Oh, looks like a fun day Anna – Moo Brew – at first I thought beer made from milk!

    Anna - November 13, 2014 Reply

Did you see the little disclaimer at the bottom Rachel, not suitable for bogans. LOL!

ela@GrayApron - November 13, 2014 Reply

Oh boy, sounds like a lot of fun! I haven’t been to many of those but I bet I would enjoy it greatly! Ice cream flavors…I don’t usually experiment. I like walnut, especially in the winter.

    Anna - November 13, 2014 Reply

Sooooo much fun Ela. It was a wonderful day! 🙂
Yeah, I’m not usually one to experiment too much with the ice cream flavors either, but perhaps I should, because dang it was delicious. Walnut ice cream would be goooooood.
