Human Brochure – Like a Meerkat that got the Cream

Hard Bean: Human Brochure - Like a Meerkat that got the Cream. Anna Johnston - www.shenannagans.com

As some of you may know, I am one of the lucky Berra natives to be chosen to participate in Chapter 2 of the 101 Human Brochure in the Food & Wine group. Visit Canberra have planned a bunch of fun things for us to eat, drink and see around the Nation’s Capital over the coming months, and in return I get to share what’s hot through my social media networks and the Human Brochure website.

Canberra is often forgotten by Australians as a travel destination – I know, I know…. why would anyone visit a city designed for politicians and public servants right? Well my friends, there is so much more to see and do in my fine city, especially from a cultural and foodie point of view.

First stop on the epic 10 hour ‘human’ eat & drinkathon around the Berra region was The Cupping Room. Now ya’ll know how much I love caffeine right?  It’s the rocket fuel that puts the meerkat in my mantra, so I was feeling pretty pumped at the thought of consuming my weight in their fruity-nutty beans.

The founder of Ona coffee, Sasa Sestic , is seriously one passionate man when it comes to his coffee, he cheerfully welcomed us to his joint for a lesson on the coffee growing, sourcing and tasting while the staff served us all cappuccinos. BOOM, I love me a cappuccino and remain loyal to its tried-and-tested formula.

My coffee was fragrant, aromatic and decorated with pretty latte art, it wasn’t too hot. Tick!  The froth was smooth and creamy. Tick!  No floating scum. Tick!  No bubbles. Tick!  It was bliss in a tiny cup.

We spent a few hours at The Cupping Room, sniffing, sipping and slurping washed and unwashed beans as we learnt about the precious little pebbles that make my day sparkle.  I felt like I was back at Cheffie school as we were then instructed to cleanse the palate with some mineral water before being treated to a dry ice coffee production that landed us with a raspberry creaming soda iced coffee.  This may have been where I feel madly in love……. Just sayin’.

I give this coffee 5 Hard Beans.

I’ve nearly always had good coffee experiences in Canberra, but I haven’t been there for almost a year now! I’m planning a trip there in November, and will stop back here closer to the time – I LOVE coffee!! 😀

    Anna - September 17, 2014 Reply

We sure do have some top coffee spots in the Berra, let me know when you are next in town, we can grab a brew together at some of my fave spots. 🙂

      Tim | UrbanDuniya - September 17, 2014 Reply

Sounds good! I’ll be in touch! 🙂 And likewise if you’re in Melbourne some time!

        Anna - September 18, 2014 Reply

Boom! Done & Done Tim. 🙂 Sounds fab.

I’ve been to Australia a few times, I love Perth but I also visited Canberra and I liked it. I’m a big fan of coffee- friends say I’m “almost” Italian 😉 and I have to say Australia is the place where you have probably one of the best selections of different coffee types ever. You guys simply know how to make coffee and why it’s so important! And I loved the carrot cake with my morning coffee in Perth. Thanks for visiting my blog.

    Anna - August 2, 2014 Reply

Thats awesome Marta, I’ve not been to Perth yet, but I do know Canberra and the amazingness we have to offer here. Haha… My friends say I am coffee blooded the way I consume the stuff. Being ‘almost’ Italian is fun too. Yeah, we Aussies do make brilliant coffee, when I travel overseas I always bring my coffee machine with me to ensure I get a decent brew each day. Borderline obsessive I guess. Mmmmm… carrot cake frosting is the best. My pleasure re your blog, looking forward to getting to know ya. 🙂

I just took notice to your little bean rating guys, I love them.. thanks for the smile. 🙂 This looks like a great place to try!

    Anna - June 17, 2014 Reply

Haha! Yep, the little beans sure are cute. 🙂 Thanks heaps for stopping in Pamela.

Oooh the cupping room?! I am so jealous! I worked in the coffee industry for awhile and I absolutely loved it. A lot. I have had more than my fill over the years, so I do best when I only have it once and awhile, but that hasn’t really been successful. 🙂

I love it first thing, in the afternoon and in the evening when I finish up for the day.

I’ve got to subscribe so I don’t miss anything!

    Anna - June 15, 2014 Reply

You are a true #hardbean Dionne… My coffee drinking soul sister. 🙂 How fantastic working in the industry, coffee on tap. BOOM, that’s the best. Wonderful to reconnect with you my friend, very much looking forward to catching up on the years. Hugs to you. x

Congratulations on being chosen for the Human Brochure, Anna. I was lucky enough to be chosen last year and had an amazing time. I hadn’t been to Canberra for quite a while so was thrilled to find such a vibrant food and wine scene there.

    Anna - June 14, 2014 Reply

Wow Amanda, thats fantastic. Ill have to go back over your posts for a look-see at your Canberra experiences. 🙂 I do hope you have been back to my delightful city since, its a WHOLE better this year than last. Happy weekend, it sure sounds like life is wonderful your end. 🙂

Congratulations on being invited to participate. I love Canberra! I think it’s a great place to go for a long weekend because being based in Sydney, it’s such an effortless drive. I think it’s improved a lot of the last 20 years or so and really come ahead in leaps and bounds with cafes, restaurants and the foodie scene xx

    Anna - June 14, 2014 Reply

Thanks heaps Charlie, I do feel pretty darn special being able to participate in such a wonderful tourism/marketing experience. 🙂 Oh Yay, I love that you love Canberra, it really has improved a lot in the last 20 years, so much to offer, and offer in all too. Not just political buffs. Next time you are in town, give me a buzz, we can do a ‘run’ from coffee shop to restaurant to bar. 🙂 Happy weekend lovely one. xx

Sriprae - June 14, 2014 Reply

Your experience just sounds extremely delightful. Ahhh. To visit Canberra.

As I’m reading your post, I have my delicious cup of French press coffee in hand. I love coffee in the morning. Love it dark and bold sweetened with a bit of honey. What do I feel like as I drink my morning brew? Like a goddess…queen of an empire poised to conquer the day. (LOL!)

Thank you for sharing your experience. Lucky you to get to be a part of the Human Brochure event! Keep the stories coming! I want to read (and see) all about what you got to eat and drink. 🙂

Happy weekend to you! xoxo

    Anna - June 14, 2014 Reply

Oh how wonderful it would be to have my newest Texan BFF visit me here in the Berra. What fun we would have eating and drinking our way about town. YEASSS, adding this to the bucket list Miss Sriprae. 🙂 What a wonderful way to start your day, you are the second person I know that sweetens their coffee with honey/maple syrup… Maybe this is an American thing?
How wonderful, I can picture you as a Queen getting ready for your day. Oh the magical powers of coffee. LOL. Happy weekend right back at chya. Hugs. xxx

I’ve heard great things about the cupping room & judging by the give bean rating, you must be into a good thing! Love checking out both yours & Rachi Perrera’s posts on the Human Brochure. Looks like a terrific event & a truly creative way of showcasing Canberra’s finest foodie happenings.

Tis on the list for when you visit. 🙂 The Cupping Room is really making a name for themselves in the Berra, which is fantastic. #CanberraPride Totes agree, the human brochure is an incredible way to showcase ALL the amazing stuff we have going on in our fine city.

I have small children. I cannot open my eyes in the morning without coffee, let alone function as a Human Bean. Must get to the Cupping Room, it looks great.

    Anna - June 12, 2014 Reply

Hahaha… Human Bean! 🙂 Defo get on a visit to The Cupping Room, tis brill! And, thank goodness for coffee huh? I hadn’t thought about the folk with little people in their lives. Coffee would be essential. Enjoy your weekend lovely lady.

I’m a little tea pot short and stout – how does that song go again? I LOVE coffee but only drink it when out – funny little girl I am, although Pete has a Nespresso machine so you are well sorted for your visit. Need to work on the foam bit for your cup-of-chino – that’s what my mom and I call a cappuccino – hee hee.
Hugs to you darling across the big oceans separating us – for now.
🙂 Mandy xoxoxo

    Anna - June 12, 2014 Reply

Teehee… Something about being a special pot and examples of what I can do… LOL! 🙂 Yeassss, that is a funny little quirk only drinking coffee when you are out, but the quirks make you the super being you are. xxx I have been known to travel with my Nespresso machine, so if your digs didn’t have one, I’d be sorted anyways. Ha! But BOOM… Your lovely Pete has a Nespresso machine, so all I need to bring is the pods. What’s his fav blend? Hope you kids had fun on your mini adventures this past week. Looking forward to hearing what you got up too. As always, giant hugs across the oceans. Mwah. xx

Krista - June 12, 2014 Reply

How fun!! 🙂 Yes, I definitely start my day with coffee, the darker the better with frothy milk and maple syrup. 🙂

    Anna - June 12, 2014 Reply

Really… You put maple syrup in your coffee? I would never have thought to do that. I can’t imagine, hmmm… gonna have to try now.

Massive fan of The Cupping Room. Especially because you get a choice with the Beans!!!

As always, great read. Looking forward to hearing about your next adventure.

Kris, you never said… Far out, ‘Massive Fan’ is nearly an understatement. So much yumminess in a cup. #coffeeporn

Alyssa @ My Sequined Life - June 12, 2014 Reply

Oh I definitely begin my day with a cup of coffee (…or realistically three). Beyond the caffeine burst, I really love the taste! That latte art is beautiful. I’m so impressed by those who can do it! It sounds like you had a wonderful day visiting The Cupping Room. While I’m far away in the U.S., I love getting to learn about places (like Canberra) from your blog that may not have been on my radar otherwise. Thanks, Anna! 🙂

    Anna - June 12, 2014 Reply

Haha… With you on the 3 cuppa rule Alyssa, and couldn’t agree more, the taste is really great too. 🙂 I have had a bunch of lessons on how to do the latte art, but it always seems to end up looking like a dollop of froth on top and nothing like an elephant or flower. LOL! That’s fantastic, I love that you enjoy hearing about the fun things that are happening on the other side of the world. I reckon I live in one of the best cities. 🙂 Have a happy weekend lovely one.

cityhippyfarmgirl - June 12, 2014 Reply

caffeine. It truly is a wonderful thing isn’t it. One coffee a day, that’s all I have and I LOVE it. Looks like this place is the business.

…and no floating scum Anna? Phew!

    Anna - June 12, 2014 Reply

I only started drinking coffee in the last couple of years, not sure what was up with my taste buds before that… Its seriously delicious. Go you only drinking one a day too Brydie. Haha… nothing worse than floating scum in your cuppa. Blehhh! 🙂
