Take Me Out To The Ball Game

Kissing Frogs: Take Me Out To The Ball Game - Anna Johnston - www.shenannagans.com

So I am joining a baseball team! Nope, it has nothing to do with the fitness aspect of playing a sport, no my friends, that is the last thing I considered when I said yes to baseball. My mind went straight to thinking up fun team names, designing cute outfits, flags, chants and anthems. Priorities right?!

I’ve been brainstorming potential team names; Pitch Slap, Multiple Scoregasm and E-Lemon-Nators, I actually thought this name had legs, we all wear yellow..… But nope, it turns out that idea was the most strongly vetoed. I decided to step it up a notch and see what kind of response I got yelling potential team names in a crowded room….. ‘Smack my Pitch Up ~ COMMON Smack my Pitch Up’…. It scared a few people and made some laugh. A good balance of fun and tough I thought, and we’d be able to use the Prodigy song for our team anthem. Boom!

All this baseball planning got me to thinking back to 2003, and one of the most special and romantic dates of my life while I was a Summer Camp Counsellor in New Hampshire, USA. Now as ya’ll know, I enjoy a spot of adventure and love romantic comedies, so the idea of living an authentic American camp movie like experience was super exciting to me.

As an Aussie visiting the States, there were a few things that I absolutely had to do, one of which was go to a major league baseball game.

Like any group of people, there is always the Alpha, the over arching leader, and in this instance, one of the best looking boys at camp. It doesn’t sound all that romantic now, but at the time, it was completely swoon worthy when a handwritten note from Eddy G was delivered to my cabin asking me on a date to a ball game.

Eddy G & Anna J - Red Sox Game 2003

Aaahhh, the memories, I remember being giddy with excitement as we walked hand in hand through the giant big gates to Fenway Park in Boston, thousands of people milled around and smells of beer, cigarettes, and deep fried food filled my senses. Im not generally one to chow down on a Frankfurt, memories of a food poisoning from a bad dog as a child remain eternally still well fresh in my mind, but when in the US, one eats as the US folk do. So we lined up to order a Fenway Frank, a slightly garlic spiced dog wrapped in a white bread bun that had a mushie texture, slathered with onion and yellow plastic looking cheese. Sounds appetising huh?!

Red Sox Game - Fenway Park

Our seats were incredible; the innocent cheeky kisses were amplified by the awesome vibe in the Stadium. It sure is something to hear 35 thousand people chant and erupt into song.

“Take me out to the ball game
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don’t care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don’t win it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out.
At the old ball game.”

Now I haven’t seen Eddy G in the flesh since that remarkable Summer (thank goodness for social media, I am able to speak with him and his beautiful family). But the time we spent together, it is one of my happiest memories.

Cheers to Eddy G, you really knocked it out of the park!

I give Eddy G

So tell me dear reader, do you follow a sporting team or play a sport? And what team colours do you think we should use for the Smack my Pitch Up jersey?

That was a lovely summer memory. 🙂

LOL. I can totally picture the ballpark hot dogs.

I’m not a huge sports fan…although…I really got into watching the World Cup this year. LOVED it! Sent text messages to my love while he was at work, telling him about the scores and what fantastic play had transpired.

I think your team color should be ORANGE. Happy, bright, in-your-face ORANGE. Yeah! 🙂

    Anna - September 6, 2014 Reply

Haha Sriprae, maybe its just me, but the hot dog I remember more than the actual game.
Not really a sports fan myself. But like you, I got WELL into the World Cup, I was setting the alarm for the 2am on school nights to meet my mates at the pub. The office sweep took over, the TVs in the Club Lounge were all set to the Cup and everyone would wear their team colours. It was sooooo much fun! I never really picked up on the fantastic plays… So you my friend are a true soccer fan. 🙂
Ohhhh… Orange. Okay! I like Orange. It is happy! Ill put the suggestion forward. 🙂

Tandy | Lavender and Lime - September 2, 2014 Reply

I would have lavender jerseys of course. I’m quite a sports fanatic but find baseball games take far too long 🙂

    Anna - September 3, 2014 Reply

Hahaha….. Oh I LOVE that Tandy. 🙂 I can just picture you and your lavender team taking to the field. Very pretty. :O)
I didn’t think the game went for a long time, gridiron on the other hand… 8hrs. Phewww… That’s a long game!

I love to hear if girl want me to take her to the game for real, looks interesting and fun.

    Anna - September 1, 2014 Reply

It was a lot of fun Dedy! Even if you dont like sports (like me) its still worth doing, such a great vibe.

Cute story, camp counsellor hey? How very Donna Parker. You look hot in that photo!

I’m surprised you didn’t have a dawg, nuts ‘n a super sized coke whilst hangin out at a ball game? I’d love to go to a big league game.

I think your colours should be red and magenta. Good luck, looking forward to the Baseball Blogs.

    Anna - August 30, 2014 Reply

Thanks heaps Fran! 🙂 It was one hell of a Summer thats for sure!
Only so much American food this little Aussie can stomach, a super sized US portion is about 4 x our Large. Massive!
Red & Magenta… Now I like that. I shall put these colours forward to the team.

That’s something I really wanna do!!!

Blast from the past. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful memory with us.
I have always wanted to see a major league baseball game.

But to be truthful. The only real sport is cycling. 🙂 haha. But I must admit, I am very found of golf as well.

Best of luck with the baseball team. Can’t wait to see the first game.

    Anna - August 29, 2014 Reply

You are most welcome Nizz! 🙂 It really was a wonderful experience!
I can appreciate your love of cycling, but golf? WT…. I have never heard you mention a love of golf.
Stay tuned for the invite to my games. It’ll be epic! LOL.

So darn cute Anna! Thanks for sharing another great memory from abroad. Believe it or not, my only experience with baseball goes back to a rather favourite film from my youth, Geena Davies, Tom Hanks and Madonna in A League of their own. Not quite the romantic interlude as described above, but a great story told, nonetheless!!!

    Anna - August 28, 2014 Reply

Oh Alice… I heart that film so much. Actually, generally speaking, I’m big on the baseball themed movies.
And yes, I reckon it’s pretty darn cute too. 🙂

Choc Chip Uru - August 28, 2014 Reply

I hope to definitely experience a ball game with someone special one day 😀
I have never been much into sports but MEH, the atmosphere, THE ATMOSPHERE!
By the way, I don’t think I have told you this (please don’t think I am creepy!) but you are really pretty 🙂

Cheers

    Anna - August 28, 2014 Reply

Oh you have too CCU! Like you, I’m not really into sports, but there is something really special about the vibe when you are in the stadium.
Nawhhh thank you… that’s not creepy at all, it is very sweet of you to say! 🙂

Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella - August 28, 2014 Reply

Aww what sweet memories and I love that you put up a photo of the both of you! 😀

Hotly Spiced - August 28, 2014 Reply

What a great story and such lovely memories. You both look so excited in that photo. I’ve never been to a ball game but I’ve heard they’re a great day out and very exciting xx

    Anna - August 28, 2014 Reply

It really is a lovely memory Charlie. Haha… Yep, we look like a couple of kids in a candy shop.
Everything that happens in the movies at a ball game, totes happened. It was awesome! 🙂

Krista - August 28, 2014 Reply

Oh you make me laugh, luv. 🙂 Ballpark hotdogs are perfectly vile, aren’t they? But the vibe of the stadium is fantastic! I hate watching baseball on TV, but love a live game with the songs, the chants, the crappy food, and the fun. 🙂

    Anna - August 28, 2014 Reply

    Perfectly vile indeed Krista. 🙂
Like you, not big on watching baseball or any sport on the TV, but the vibe in the stadium of almost all sporting games is AWESOME.

Hannah - August 28, 2014 Reply

I love all the sports!!! Ice Hockey anyone? But actually… if they get a home final we are going… need to spend more time goggling this.

As far as colours if you aren’t getting a uniform made avoid colours everyone has. Other teams will pick these two.

Something bright and fun is my recommendation but remember most people don’t look good in yellow or orange…

    Hannah - August 28, 2014 Reply

    Have Googled… I don’t think they have a home final 🙁

    Anna - August 28, 2014 Reply

You do love ALL the sports. 🙂
Ice Hockey – Hell Yeah!!! So much fun.
I reckon we will have at least a team jersey made, and if we are doubling up in colours…. we will destroy them with our chants and anthems.
I’m learning this yellow clothing thing… I guess the E-Lemon-Nator name was not one of my finer ideas.

court - August 28, 2014 Reply

I am so impressed with this.

Lizzy (Good Things) - August 28, 2014 Reply

Wow, going to a major league baseball game must have been something! I’ve a friend working in DC and he told me they are amazing! (Love the movie Field of Dreams, incidentally). I have no idea what colours you should use for your team… but something really bright, methinks. Have a ball!

    Anna - August 28, 2014 Reply

It was sooooo much fun Liz. One of my happiest memories and also a tick for my travel bucket list. 🙂 Yeasss… Field of Dreams is brilliant. ‘Build it and they will come’.
Something bright and colourful you think. Okay, chucking that idea in the hat. 🙂
