A Cheeky Trip to the Land of Politicians & Roundabouts + AKIBA Canberra

A Cheeky Trip to the Land of Politicians & Roundabouts + AKIBA Canberra. Anna Johnston - https://shenannagans.com

Do you ever get the feeling your life has shifted gears when you weren’t looking and you find yourself living a new sort of pace? You never know what’s around the corner do you? I mean seriously folks, 2017 has already been a bit of a mind basher for me with all the unexpected, sometimes challenging but amazing experiences coming my way!

So, here’s the thing, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind so far; like one day I’m a surviving cyclone casualty, just freshly out of a caste from a broken ankle, to starting a new job because the old job didn’t survive good ol’ Debbie! I know right – crazy!

And in the blink of an eye, I find myself sitting on a jet plane winging my way back home to the Whitsunday’s cradling a bounty of Black Truffles (gifted from my buddy the Truffle Farmer) and praying my back pack that is stuffed to overflowing with a selection of Vietnamese cooking supplies for the pantry, (another gift, this time from the Bestie’s restaurant), doesn’t come loose all over one’s fellow passengers.  I mean, how could anyone explain that?  True story my friends!

A very special friend’s birthday party brought me back to the land of politicians and roundabouts in the dead of winter for 2 days of action packed foodie fun. I seriously took one for the team my friends as I breakfast’d, brunched, lunched and dined at fancy restaurants and partied at the ever so sheek and swanky QT Canberra Lounge on the 15th floor. Ah yes, the good old Berra certainly did deliver all the way through this crazy wonderful weekend.

So, foodie highlights I hear you ask? Absolutely, hands down AKIBA. Made all the more special because I got to hang out with one of my oldest mates, Chicka. What a fire-cracker of a woman she is too, and possibly the only foodie friend who (like me) has no shame when it comes to whipping out the phone to navigate and understand descriptive menus and ingredients.

Selecting from the one page menu is no easy task as every item screams eat me. As they say in Japan, Omakase: “Please decide for me”, we opted for the Just Feed Me! menu for $49/person. Now this option does require you trust the chef, but friends, hand over heart, I guarantee that Akiba Canberra wont’t disappoint with 8 of their most popular dishes and… it’s such GREAT value for money.

All the flavours and textures in this Lemon Tofu cheese cake. ⚡️☀️🍹

The Kingfish was my favourite dish, actually my most favourite food I have eaten in 2017, the perfect balance of chilli and citrus. YUM! The dumplings were amazing, the dressing was mouth-watering and delicious, if it was acceptable to pick the bowl up and drink it all down, I would of. The pancake was an interesting texture made a little better by the Kewpie mayo. The beef short rib fell apart with a touch of a fork, the Chinese broccoli a delightful pairing with the fried rice. As we scooped the last mouthful of creamy lemon tofu cheese cake in, we were well and truly full and thoroughly satisfied.

So, have you been to AKIBA Canberra? And how do you navigate your way through highly descriptive menus? Do you ask the waiter, wing it or ask the Google?

Canberra has a surprising number of excellent restaurants. It’s actually rapidly becoming the hip capital. Your meal looks delicious. Next time I’m there, I will pop in for a treat.

    Anna - September 18, 2017 Reply

Yep, the bad reputation the Berra once had is now very much something of the past. Canberra is killing it with incredible dining experiences. When you visit AKIBA, just order 8 plates of Kingfish. Haha

Tom - September 17, 2017 Reply

I first thought 49$ is rather expensive, but then I saw all the food and I have to say: Go for it! Choosing from a menu can be so difficult, especially when you’re in one place only once, I know this feeling exactly 😀 If I had to choose one dish from all the foods you showed me, I’d pick the Pork bun though. I had one of those bad boys at a street food festival once and the are sooo good!

    Anna - September 18, 2017 Reply

Yeah, I agree, the price is at first a little much, but when you get that much food coming your way and leave almost overdone, I reckon the $49 is amazing. 🙂 The pork buns were pretty darn delicious, but the kingfish was the winner for me.

Megan Jerrard - September 11, 2017 Reply

Everything looks incredible – will have to make a reservation when I head back to Canberra – I’ll be back to see family in December. The Kingfish does look amazing, pretty good recommendation for being your favorite dish of the year!

    Anna - September 12, 2017 Reply

Oh yeah, def check out Akiba, and ask for 10 plates of the Kingfish. Haha! 🙂

Denise Browning - September 4, 2017 Reply

Everything look delish but that passion fruit mojito made me thirty. Cheers to you and your new job!

    Anna - September 11, 2017 Reply

The passionfruit mojito was so refreshingly delicious, went down a little too easy. One could very easily find oneself rather tipsy after a couple of them. Haha!

Those dishes seem so mouth-watering, Anna! Thanks for sharing your post!

    Anna - September 11, 2017 Reply

Yep, everything about the experience was just wonderful! 🙂

David - August 23, 2017 Reply

Woaah! You got me hungry. The food looks amazing.

    Anna - August 24, 2017 Reply

It was pretty rad to visit ‘home’ and experience one of the Berras best restaurants. If you are even in town, I absolutely recommend you visit. 🙂

Jem @ Lost in Utensils - July 3, 2017 Reply

Oh God that food looks SO good…not so good when I’m reading this and VERY hungry! I was just talking to someone the other day about Canberra and how I haven’t been since I was a kid. Really want to go and check out the food scene.

mjskitchen - June 19, 2017 Reply

That looks like a fun place to celebrate a birthday! The food looks amazing and so different from anything I’ve seen here. All that seafood has me quite jealous you know. I don’t get it much living in the high desert. I’m very curious about the tofu cheesecake. I have to admit I’d be skeptical. 🙂 Fun post!

    Anna - June 19, 2017 Reply

I think it’d be an incredible place to celebrate anything MJ, it was very cool, the food kinda just keeps coming too. The seafood was wonderful, my fave dish of the meal. And I can absolutely vouch for the tofu cheesecake, if you are gonna eat tofu, eat it in this form. SO GOOD!!! 🙂

Evelyne CulturEatz - June 17, 2017 Reply

Ha love that concept to not choose your dishes lo. Everything looks so amazing and I am curious about the lemon tofu cheese cake!

    Anna - June 19, 2017 Reply

Its totally the way to go if you just can’t decide, I actually prefer to allow the chefs to suggest. As a chef I remember loving being able to surprise guests with magical creations Id come up with on the night. Also… tofu cheese cake is the goods. 🙂

Krista Bjorn - June 15, 2017 Reply

Oh my gosh, every single dish looks spectacular! I’m slightly swooning over the Passionfruit Mojito. 🙂 So glad you had such a splendid time. xo

    Anna - June 19, 2017 Reply

Passionfruit Mojito was AMAZING… have recreated that bad boy a couple of times since coming home. And yes, it was wonderful to visit my friends and family, I have missed that. 🙂

John/Kitchen Riffs - June 15, 2017 Reply

Mmmm, look at all that gorgeous food! Great pictures. And I’ll bet anyone who knows what they’re doing feed me! Sounds like a fun time. Sure is a fun post! Thanks.

Why thank ya John, glad you enjoyed the post and my pictures. We had such a fun evening, looking at everything makes me want to do it all again. 🙂

Roundabouts are just something I can’t get used to while abroad! Good thing I don’t drive while traveling 😉 All of that food looks aaaaamazing, especially those pork buns! Thanks for sharing and happy travels 🙂

    Anna - June 19, 2017 Reply

Haha… think that is a universal thought re the roundabouts, Canberra is famous for them, so I know my way around them. See what I did there?! Glad ya enjoyed my post, happy travels to you too.

Lorraine @ Not Quite Nigella - June 12, 2017 Reply

I have been to Akiba-it was a while ago but the food was ok but not amazing. Maybe they’ve changed chefs and it is now fabulous! It was a very long time ago and your dishes looked great 🙂

    Anna - June 19, 2017 Reply

Interesting, I would have thought you received the royal treatment when you visited, unless you were there under one of your pseudonyms?! 🙂 We had a wonderful time, but honestly, the food would have had to royally stink for us not to enjoy it. We hadn’t seen each other in 6 months, so the laughs and frivolity of the evening really made things pop!

Norma Chang - June 12, 2017 Reply

What a wonderful dining experience. Love the title “Feed Me Menu”. Do the dishes change with the season or remain the same throughout the year? Great to celebrate with best friends and get together with family.

    Anna - June 19, 2017 Reply

That is a very good question Norma, I am not too sure whether the menu changes? I will have to ask my Canberra friends to visit in the summer. And yes, all the yes to time with friends and family.

Liz - June 12, 2017 Reply

Yes, 2017 will be a year you’ll never forget! But thank goodness for some fun, and delicious, experiences like this vist to AKIBA. The food looks extraordinary!!!

    Anna - June 19, 2017 Reply

Indeed Liz, indeed! 🙂 Remembering to find the positives when going through the crazy ups and downs of life, visiting AKIBA was incredible and def an up for 2017.

Denise Browning - June 12, 2017 Reply

Every single dish looks delish especially the dumpligs. 😉 Lucky girl you are!

    Anna - June 19, 2017 Reply

The dumpling were the BUSINESS!!! So dang tasty! And yes, it was a wonderful experience after the last couple of months. Blessed I am! 🙂

Tim UrbanDuniya - June 11, 2017 Reply

All of that food looks incredible!! I’ve never been to AKIBA, but I think I might need to make a trip!!!

Was that your first time back to Canberra since you moved to QLD? it certainly has been one heck of a year for you, my friend – keep smiling 🙂

    Anna - June 11, 2017 Reply

Kingfish, be sure to order the Kingfish when you visit AKIBA. It’s amazing. Be sure to tag me inyour pics aight?!

It was a bit chilly visiting the Berra, but all the rich food and booze helped keep me warm, and seeing my friends and spending time with family. BEST!

Mabel Kwong - June 9, 2017 Reply

So nice of you to pop back down to ‘Berra for your friend’s birthday! They are very lucky to have you as a friend and I hope it was an amazing party and celebration. This place Akiba looks amazing. Those pancakes looks soooo small but they also look like the kind that’s soft and fluffy! That egg with rice also looks scrumptious – that’s the way like my egg, yolk and whites separate and a bonus if the yolk is soft and a tad runny 😀

I hope all of your Vietnamese cooking made it back safe and sound back to the Whitsundays. Have fun cooking up a storm and most of all, have a lot of fun with food. Sending you lots of hugs and love xxx

    Anna - June 11, 2017 Reply

You would totally have loved the food at AKIBA little sis, it wasn’t too spicy and was varied and delicious and great photos for Instagram too. Haha.

Started cooking with my Vietnamese food today, man I’m lucky to have so many wonderful people in my life. Love you sis. Hugs and warm headed your way. Xx

What a year you have had Anna. It shows how strong and resilient you are to have managed so much. The getaway sounds fabulous and what a scrumptious feast! Sending good wishes your way and hoping the rest of the year is a smooth one.

    Anna - June 11, 2017 Reply

Haha… its almost crazy to my brain that I have had so much weird happen this year. But thank you for your beautiful comment Sue, you are amazing. Fingers crossed the rest of the year is as wonderful and tasty as last weekend. 🙂

Gary Lum - June 8, 2017 Reply

It’s great you got a chance to return home to enjoy a celebration and some good food experiences.
I bet though, as you return to the Whitsunday Islands you’re appreciating being able to enjoy a brief cold change and return to the glorious warm of Queensland.

    Anna - June 8, 2017 Reply

It was amazing to see family and friends and eat some of the most incredible food too. The Kingfish ceviche was AMAZING! But, not gonna lie, it was wonderful to return home to the Whitsundays and be able to strip down to my shorts and t-shirt. 🙂

Tandy | Lavender and Lime - June 8, 2017 Reply

I love the idea of a Just Feed Me menu. The last time we had dinner at our favourite restaurant I made the chef decide what I should eat for dessert 🙂

    Anna - June 8, 2017 Reply

Totally agree Tandy, allowing the chef to let loose and create their finest is the BEST! Loved every single mouthful. And go you re your dessert, I do hope it was a delicious treat.
